Essence Festival

Updated: Nov 15, 2018

I recently attended the Essence Festival, which is held annually in New Orleans, Louisiana, where my girlfriends and I had the most exciting time! I've been to the Essence Festival before, but this was my first time partaking in the entire three-day weekend festivities. There were so many events to attend, performances to watch, celebrities to see, and places to party! The beauty of the Essence Festival is that it brought out nothing but Black Magic! My black brothers and sisters were out and about enjoying everything that the Essence Festival had to offer (and looking fabulous while doing so!). And PLEASE don't get me started on the food, LAWD! Are you planning on attending the Essence Festival next year? Here are some tips to get you ready for one of the greatest festivals ever:

Book your room as early as possible! There are many faithful attendees of the Essence Festival that book their rooms as soon as the festival ends, so if you want to find nice rooms at decent prices, book your rooms at least six months to a year in advance!

Book your room as close to the Superdome as possible! As much as my friends and I enjoyed our hotel stay at Comfort Suites (located in Kenner, LA) I wish we would have gotten a hotel or AirBnB that was closer to the festivities. Of course the prices for the room accommodations are more expensive since the concert is held downtown but it beats being stuck in traffic for 45 minutes each day and paying for parking everywhere we go!

Speaking of parking- if you're driving to the Essence Festival, please expect to pay for parking! Unless you're using Uber, Lyft, or any other car services, or within walking distance of the Essence Festival, paying to park is pretty much inevitable. It costs $20 a night to park at the Essence Festival and anywhere from $10 TO $30 to park in the surrounding downtown area.

It is wonderful to use driving companies such as Uber and Lyft if you and your friends want to avoid paying for parking, but if you do use Uber, Lyft, or any similar car services, be prepared for their fees to be higher than normal. It is Essence Festival weekend, so these companies will increase the prices since they will be highly in-demand. If a driver has to pick you up at three in the morning (after you've had one too many hand grenades), the prices will be more expensive than what you would normally pay for an Uber or Lyft. Of course, you should be responsible if you've partied too hard which makes these car companies a safe option.

Traffic will be everywhere (sorry!), so just find your best music playlist for you and your friends to jam to until you make it to your destination!

It will be hot and humid during the
